Day 1 Thoughts
> Live on-location in Richmond, VA at the CAA Tournament
Hey everyone! So my goal after each of these long days is to put together a sort of wrap up section with some daily awards, probably more for my own amusement than for yours. Hopefully some of you will find this entertaining. Anyway, I apologize I am putting this up so long after tonight’s final game, but I had quite the time getting back to my hotel outside of downtown Richmond. But one bus ride coupled with talk of mid-major basketball, a stop at a CVS for snacks, and about a mile of walking later, here I sit, barely awake, watching Friday night NBA hoops, and writing to you the reader. With that said, here are my awards for the day.
Player of the Day: Antoine Agudio – Hofstra – 27 points (9-20 FG), 5 rebounds, 3 assists
Sure Hofstra lost, and sure he was hoisting up a lot of shots, but c’mon it’s Antoine Agudio, one of the nation’s top scorers and the Pride’s all time leader in points. Oh, and it was his last collegiate game! I don’t know if I was more shocked or disappointed when the sharpshooter only had two points at the half, but he just took over in the second half dropping 25 points and going 5-7 from beyond the arc after laying an 0-4 goose egg from deep in the first frame. It was a frustrating end to a brilliant career, but we still got to see Agudio’s brilliant shooting on display one more time.
Team of the Day: Northeastern
This wasn’t that hard of a choice to make. Not only were the Huskies responsible for one of two blowouts today, but they played probably the most consistent overall game today of any one team. Yes they shot 52% from the field, and yes they shot 8-17 from beyond the arc, but it was the fact that they played strong in both halves that made this an easy pick. No other team today was as good from start to finish at the Huskies were.
Game of the Day: William & Mary vs. Georgia State
How could you possibly ask for a better game? The Panthers looked like they were going to pull the old 12 vs. 5 upset until W&M’s David Schneider decided to knock down a pull up, contested three-pointer with two second to go to win game. This was the quintessential college basketball game, both teams giving it their all, and everything coming down to one brilliant play in crunch time.
Play of the Day: Schneider’s game winner
This was a no-brainer.
Quote of the Day: Pat Kennedy – Towson Head Coach
“As I told my guys, you’re playing for an NCAA Tournament bid in every game. You aren’t playing for a bid at the end of our tournament, you’re playing for it at the beginning of the tournament.”
Fans of the Day: Drexel
This was a tough one, since the James Madison fans were raucous for the entirety of their game; I have to honor creativity and humor though. I give the Dragons’ fans credit; they went at it with the Delaware pep band all afternoon, and waited until the right moment to unveil their secret weapon. With no more than 8 minutes or so to go in the second half, coming out of a time out the Drexel student section unveiled a large homemade banner that read “Do you know what’s so great about Delaware? Neither do we!” I said before, I’ll say it again, God bless college sports.
Alright everyone, get some rest, it’s another long exciting day from Richmond tomorrow with the quarterfinals set to tip off at noon!
