Game 5: VCU vs. Towson
> Live on-location in Richmond, VA at the CAA Tournament
This one is about as much of a David vs. Goliath match up as you can get in this conference tournament. Towson looked good yesterday in blowing out a weak Hofstra team, but this is VCU. For starters, the Rams are the #1 seed in this tournament, they will likely get an at-large bid even if they don’t win the CAA Championship, and they have two legitimate NBA prospects on their roster in junior guard Eric Maynor and freshman forward Larry Sanders.
Maynor needs no introduction really, but I’ll give you one anyway. He burst onto the national scene when he tour up Duke in leading the Rams to a first round upset of the Blue Devils in the NCAA Tournament. This year he has continued his phenomenal play, posting averages of 17.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists in earning CAA Player of the Year honors.
Then there is Sanders who I’m most excited to see. The freshman was named to the All- CAA Rookie team as well as the All-CAA Defensive team, both were well deserved. For starters he has just a freakish build, standing a thin 6’9” but with a wingspan that hovers around 7 ½ feet. While his 4.4 points and 4.8 rebounds may not look all that impressive, his 3 blocks per game in just 15 minutes of playing time are downright ridiculous. This is the type of player who if he adds fifteen to twenty pounds over the course of the next two seasons will absolutely annihilate this conference. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to seeing what the freshman can do today.
Tony Durant and Josh Thornton each had 20-point games yesterday for the Tigers; Towson will need more of the same from them today. Like coach Pat Kennedy said yesterday, his team is playing for an NCAA Tournament bid in every game, this will be their toughest test so far. It’s five minutes until tip-off, I’ll be back midway through the first half with an update.
