Game 6 Final: William & Mary 63 - Old Dominion 60
> Live on-location in Richmond, VA at the CAA Tournament
William & Mary is starting to make a habit out of this. Just a day after sophomore David Schneider hit a three-pointer that launched the Tribe into the quarterfinals; there were more late game heroics for the comeback kids in green. With just seven seconds left in a tie ballgame, coach Tony Shaver called for the ball to wind up in the hands of his slumping senior guard Nathan Mann. The Kansas native did not disappoint. Nathan hit a pull up three pointer from the left wing that would be the final and deciding basket in a game that had no shortage of exciting plays in the final minutes.
After starting the game a miserable 0-10 from the field, W&M rebounded to shoot a mind-boggling 73.7% from the field in the second half, including a stellar 6-7 from beyond the arc. It was another team effort as Laimis Kisielius and Danny Sumner both joined Mann in double figures (they each had 16), and the Tribe held off an unrelenting Old Dominion.
Gerald Lee had a strong game as was expected from everyone in the building. The sophomore big man put up 20 points on 6-12 shooting and added seven rebounds. Senior Brian Henderson added 15 points, including a go-ahead three pointer with just three minutes to go in the game, a shot that swung the momentum to the Monarchs momentarily.
It’s official now though, the 2008 CAA Tournament has its Cinderella team. It might be a stretch to label a team seeded fifth with that title, but the fashion that the Tribe has been winning games calls for a lofty name. We’ll see if Shaver and the boys are ready for their toughest challenge yet tomorrow when they get VCU in the semi-finals.
On a nice side note, even in defeat Old Dominion showed spirit. As I made my way into the post game press conference I walked past the ODU student section where fans, cheerleaders, and band members alike stood with arms around each other and sang the school song.
I apologize again for the delay getting my thoughts up on this one, the press conference went a little long and dinner was served. The beauty of weekend tournaments is the longer you stay, the better the food gets. Yesterday it was ziti and meatballs, tonight, meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans. It’s forty-two minutes until tip-off of game seven, I’ll be back in a little bit with a preview!
