Arizona State didn't put up a ton of runs, but they won today like they've won many times this season - with the long ball.
Matt Spencer struck the first blow in the second with a three-run shot to put ASU up 3-0. UC Irvine, however, came right back and put four on the board.
The Sun Devils tied it up on a solo homer by C.J. Retherford, and then, in the eighth, got the game-winning blast, a solo short from Ike Davis, for the final margin.
The Sun Devils will play the winner of tonight's Oregon St.-Cal St. Fullerton game on Monday evening, while the Anteaters will take on the loser of that game in an elimination game on Monday afternoon.
Jason Jarvis relieved Mike Leake in the eighth and pitched the final two innings for the win. Scott Gorgen pitched into the eighth for UC Irvine and threw well with the exception of the three longballs, which ultimately saddled him with the loss, and stopped him short of his fifth straight complete game.
