Game 9: Semifinals - VCU vs. William & Mary

> Live on-location in Richmond, VA at the CAA Tournament

My theory about weekend tournaments and food continues. Only one meal today since we’re playing just two games, but what a meal. Pulled pork, mac and cheese and of course fudge brownies to top it all off; not too shabby.
Also, I’ve noticed that coming to the arena each day with the same group of people, going through the same motions; it feels a lot like coming into the office. It’s never dull like a 9 to 5 can tend to be, but its got the same comfortable familiarity. Anyway, onto the preview.

In theory VCU shouldn’t struggle too much in this game with William & Mary since they have a strong advantage inside. However, Old Dominion had this same advantage and the Tribe was still able to outwork them and pull out the win. The Rams will really just need to step up their offensive production today. Defensively they did just fine in slowing down Towson, but they had trouble hitting their shots all day. Eric Maynor and Larry Sanders (my new favorite player) had good games, but Jamal Shuler was non-existent and that will have to change.

For the Tribe it’s really been scoring by committee. In each of their two games this weekend different players have stepped up at different times. On Friday it was David Schneider, yesterday it was Nathan Mann and athletic swing man Danny Sumner. Who will step up today? Regardless, if this winds up being a close game down the stretch, Coach Tony Shaver will have to feel confident seeing as how his squad has pulled out two close ones in two days.

VCU has won the last 12 meetings between the two clubs and holds a 29-10 all-time series lead. The last time the two clubs met in the postseason, the Rams knocked off W&M 62-59 in the opening round of the 2006 CAA Tournament. The Tribe will be looking for their first ever semifinal win in this tournament.

The fans are starting to file in and no surprise but there is plenty of yellow already with the Rams having the home support. We’re 12 minutes away from the start of our first semifinal and another round of the Larry Sanders watch!
